Why does our personality change over time?
Why does our personality change as we mature and age? This is one of the great questions raised in the study MBTI. It’s well-known that even MBTI experts change their letter preferences as the years go by. My mentor in MBTI did this and at the time it was shocking to me. Now that I have done it myself twice I’m more understanding; I even think this is healthy to do if you agree the goal is not any one four letter code; but rather, XXXX, being at 50-50 in all four preferences, right in the middle, tolerant of and resilient in all your capacities.
First we need a more precise question: Why do our personality preferences change over time? Let’s also clarify we’re talking spans of two or more years here, not change your mind from yesterday.
The advanced Three Selves topic of the Inner Court in the head suggests WHY our preferences change over time and why this is natural and a blessing.
It has to do with the etheric charge we hold in any single embodiment and the natural arc our charge goes thru. This takes us back to plants; plants out-picture the workings of the etheric formative forces better than rocks, animals or humans. What our etheric body is doing is always more obvious in plants than in ourselves.
You’ll know in the plant world, a single plant has a clearly defined life cycle: initial sprouting, growth to full maturity; and then, waning forces until death and recycling of organic materials.
Human have this same arc. We call it aging but we have poor language for even our present understandings of aging and the Three Selves can help here.
In our youth, our etheric forces first energize the Inner Court in our gut. During and after puberty, our etheric charge shifts up to the Inner Court in the head. This shifts our focus from self-esteem issues, “Am I good enuf?” to self-concept issues, “What do good people do in this situation I am in?” and “Who am I?” issues.
Our brain heals from front to back, from beta, then thru alpha, then theta and if you want to heal all the way, then you explore delta. Consequently in our early adulthood, our fore-brain is most energized, the two quadrants of King Arthur and Lancelot. In early adult life we spend years learning to be more effective in the here and now, with the talents and assets we have to work with.
Later in life, for many people and for most people who pursue ANY path at all of personal-spiritual growing, a degree of integration takes place in King Arthur and Lancelot in the front brain quadrants.
By ago 40 our etheric charge begins to decline even if our intellect and our loving for others can continue to expand forever.
When our charge decreases in our front brain, the unresolved issues in our rear two brain quadrants become relatively more dominant. What’s in our rear two brain quadrants? Our old habits from early childhood, from our peri-natal and pre-natal experience and from prior existences
If you have read this far, you won’t be surprised to learn we had other preferences and other habits in other prior existences. As these come back to us, as we resolve issues in the fore-brain and as we hopefully enter more peace in mid-life, these older issues, preferences, habits and ways of doing things come more to the forefront of our personality Now you have the opportunity to resolve dysfunctional habits from your past, which is always a good idea. In my healing work, I call the
In conclusion, the above suggests how our etheric charge travels first thru the gut brain, then on the the front of the head brain and lastly, creates conditions where material in our two rear brain quadrants become much more prominent and “in our face.” This suggests why our personality changes over time.
