Love is not a feeling says Compassionate Communication
Marshall Rosenberg of Compassionate Communication (CNVC.org) has a breakthru idea I just love. He says love is not a feeling. Rather love is actions that demonstrate, “I am connected with you,” and, “I am committed to you.”
This replaces the older, romantic and commercial idea of love is primarily how I feel about you.
Love songs on the radio are major propaganda for this emotionally immature idea that “love is how I feel about you.” Songs such as the Eagles (?) song, “Just remember that I love you and it will be all right,” is asking a girl to not think for her self, to feel but not to think. He encourages her to lower her own healthy boundaries so he can come in to her.
The girl should be saying to her self, “Wait, this does not feel comfortable, does not feel congruent.” She should be asking the boy, “What have you DONE that shows your connection and commitment to me?”
Without actions, a feeling of love is quite empty and weak.
Related to this is propoganda to look for love outside ourself. To prove the strength of this conditioning, simply imagine who you wish to spend the rest of your life with. Who is that?
You will inevitably picture some male or female you know.
Yet who is the only person you are guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with? Your self.
Emotionally mature persons have a hunch the answer to “Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places” is to look for it first inside your self, in your relationship with your own inner child, your own Little Artist.
I hope all of you have the chance to expereince NVC, Compassionate Communication in your area. NVC is a grassroots movement addressing issues such as:
• What prevents even lifelong couples from agreeing on important issues?
• What can I do to help my kids have healthy intimate relationships?
• What can we do when communication breaks down?
• What causes so much confusion about what “love” is?
• How does cultural conditioning prevent satisfying relationships?
